It will be the fourth IKEA store in Romania and will have a different format from the ones existing on the local market, that will make IKEA more accessible and better adapted to urban lifestyle.
The Cluj-Napoca store will be the first IKEA-owned store integrated into a new shopping mall development in the IKEA Southeast Europe region. With over 17,000 sqm of space, the new store will offer a wide variety of items from the well-known IKEA range. Most products will be available for immediate take-away, while for more complex purchases, customers will be able to place orders in store or online and have the products delivered directly to their homes. The store will offer the same services as the larger IKEA stores, including home planning and pick-up services, and will also feature a Swedish Restaurant and Swedish Food Market.
“Cluj-Napoca has long been an important city in our development plans, and we are happy to confirm the next step in our journey here. Our ambition is to come closer to more people and make the IKEA experience easier to access, while keeping affordability at the heart of what we do. Together with RIVUS, we are creating a new type of IKEA destination for Romania, integrated into everyday city life, while offering the same inspiration, services and home furnishing expertise our customers expect from us,” states Veronica Matei, Country Real Estate Manager, IKEA South East Europe.
“RIVUS is the largest mixed-use urban regeneration project currently under development in Romania. An initiative shaped from the very beginning by the needs and expectations of the local community. IKEA has consistently been one of the most requested brands by the Cluj community, as reflected in the studies and market research we have conducted over the years. We are delighted to bring this partnership to life, marking both a first for our portfolio and a major investment for Cluj-Napoca. With 80% of its retail space already leased, RIVUS is set to become a landmark regional destination, bringing together major international brands and innovative concepts, while generating long-term benefits for the city and the local economy,” says Tudor Ungurean, Chief Executive Officer, IULIUS.
The new store is part of the three-year investment plan recently announced by the company in Romania. IKEA will invest approximately EUR 130 million, including EUR 125 million in expansion and development projects and an additional EUR 4.4 million to support lower prices in FY27. Of the EUR 125 million investment, around EUR 55 million will support the expansion of IKEA’s network across Romania, with 10 new customer meeting points across Romania, including in Cluj-Napoca. IKEA is also exploring opportunities to develop partnerships with established retailers and shopping destinations already present in Romania, as part of Ingka Group’s broader development of new smaller formats.
IKEA has built its presence in Cluj-Napoca gradually since 2019, starting with a kitchen planning point, followed by a Pick-up Point in 2021 and a Plan and Order Point in 2025. IKEA currently operates three stores in Romania (two in Bucharest and one in Timișoara), six Plan and Order Points (in Bucharest – Orhideea and Grand Arena, Constanța, Cluj-Napoca, Brașov and Iași) and five Pick-up Points (in Bucharest, Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, Constanța and Sibiu).
